An Awesome Week!

It's that time of year. . . NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK!! Here at LPLS we are so excited to celebrate National Library Week with our staff, patrons, and community.

This year, National Library Week is being celebrated from April 13-19. This year's theme is "Lives change @ your library." We wanted to start the week off with a post offering some NLW facts, as well as some facts about LPLS that you may not have known. There are links throughout the post you can click on to be directed to the coordinating website.

National Library Week
Research conducted in the mid-1950's showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions, and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the American Library Association and the American Book Publishers formed a non-profit organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.

The committee developed a plan for NLW based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. The first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"

After the second NLW was observed in 1959, the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration.

NLW is observed each year, generally during the second full week, in April.

Celebrations that take place during NLW include: National Library Workers Day (Tuesday) National Bookmobile Day (Wednesday), and Celebrate Teen Literature Day (Thursday).
